After too many negative early reported issues with the Galaxy Fold smartphone, Samsung yanked it off the market, days before it was to go on sale. What was going to be a break-through in screen technology turned to, literally, a broken screen.

But there may be hope yet for the Galaxy Fold as new and fascinating technology comes to light. A new approach to bendable phone screens involves metamaterials, an artificially structured, man-made material that uses different sub-wavelength structures. Matt Simon and Arielle Pardes of Wired.com tell us all about this bizarre new material that may just be the Galaxy Fold’s saving grace.
